Hope vs The Material

Oops – Did I perhaps just spent the twenty-odd pounds I was going to spend on a pair of toasty Muji Earmuffs ( http://www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?V=1&Sec=5&Sub=129&PID=5281) on entering the Mslexia novel competition (http://www.mslexia.co.uk/whatson/msbusiness/ncomp_active.php) ?

Yes. Yes I did. But the competition is being judged by Sarah Waters this year. Perhaps, if Kilea gets past the initial readers, Waters will be sympathetic towards the supernatural/psychological elements of the novel?

If you have a scarf you’re planning on purchasing, or a good pair of winter boots, consider joining me instead in a ticket to the literary lottery. Perhaps it’ll be a milder winter this year.

  1. This is brilliant financial planning. If you don’t have earmuffs, you’ll be forced to stay in writing. And in the meantime, you may win.

I’ve been on a contest kick as well lately. The last one is a short that has to be submitted mid-October then it’s full-on novel time. I’ve got to either finish it or move on to something else.

  2. I didn’t realise I was being so smart…

Contests are so much fun. If you win, fabulous. If you don’t, by the time the announcement rolls around, time has already worked its magic and the emotional impact is negligible and it’s just a normal day.
